Miss Universe Canada 2010 Contestant - Megan Maycher's Photo & Profile/Biodata

Megan Maycher

AGE: 21 | HEIGHT: 5'6" | HOMETOWN: COQUITLAM, BC

Megan is a soft spoken, dynamic and ambitious young lady. She is a 3rd year student at Simon Fraser University majoring in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. Currently carrying out her pre requisites for Dentistry, she recently completed her DAT (Dental Admissions Test) and is in the process of applying to Canadian Dental schools. She hopes to one day specialize in orthodontics and own her own practice.

Megan grew up in Winnipeg Manitoba, following her family to British Columbia in 2005 as they made the permanent move to Canada’s west coast. Leaving friends and family behind was at the time a difficult change, but she has adjusted well and is grateful to live in such a beautiful city.

She spends her summers at Lake of the Woods, enjoying boating, swimming and water sports. As well as spending much of her time on her grandparent’s farm, dirt biking in the summers, snowmobiling in the winter and enjoying the outdoors. It was the farm where Megan discovered from a young age her love for animals, naming everything from bunnies, to chickens, frogs and bugs and claiming them to be her pets.

Megan is an advocate in the importance of education, spending part of her time tutoring grade 12 math and calculus, and the greater part of her time devoted to her own studies.

She loves to stay active and has always been involved in many athletics, spending the majority of her sports career devoted to hockey, soccer and gymnastics, but has also participated in rowing, rugby, field hockey and volleyball. She continues to run and snowboard and spends any free time exercising; she is currently training for the Vancouver 2010 half marathon, her second half marathon, completing her first in 2008.

Megan is excited for the opportunity to represent young Canadian women and hopes to spread the message of the importance of working hard and approaching goals with enthusiasm and decency.

What would be your "dream job" in life?
My dream job in life would be the one I am currently pursuing; dentistry. My entire family is evolved in the field and it has long since been my dream to become a part of it as well. People say that you should do what you love, or what you are passionate about, to say I am passionate about teeth may be a bit of an over statement, but to say I am impassioned about helping others, health care, and continuing the dental tradition of my family is definite.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life? Why?
My older brother Myles is an extremely commendable person, and I admire his ability to take people as they are. He is a very good judge of character and has an amazing ability of accepting people flaws and frustrations. I cannot even count how many times he has helped me out and is never one to ask for anything in return. He is an exceptionally respectable person and has a countless number of characters that I would love to posses.

What is the proudest personal accomplishment (other than being in this or any other beauty pageant competition)
My proudest accomplishment to date is simply working hard. I am an extremely ambitious and self motivated person and take pride in all my conquests, big or small since each one proves to me that I am capable. Some more notable ones would be surviving my first and second year university in the Sciences (not for the faint of heart), I tackled full course loads head on and was able to achieve the marks I had set forth to accomplish. Another proud moment took place recently when I finished writing my DAT exam (Dental Admissions Test), as it required a lot of committed study time on top of keeping up with my classes. In addition to my school achievements I was very proud of completing the half marathon in 2008, it was a personal goal I challenged myself with and the feeling of feat was tremendously gratifying.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?
My long term career ambitions are specializing in orthodontics and owning my own practice. I am currently completing my pre requisites at the University of Simon Fraser and have applied to Canadian Dental School for Fall’2010. With high hopes and the willingness to work extremely hard I have my fingers crossed that I will soon be on the path to a successful career.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.
I was born and raised in Winnipeg Manitoba, moving out to BC in grade 11. The transition was at the time a little bit devastating as I left all my long time friends and family behind, but as my parents assured me an adjustment took place and now I could not imagine living anywhere else. I am truly a die-hard BC fan. With that being said Winnipeg will always be home and I am not okay with people making fun of the ludicrous weather and mosquitoes.
I had a very fun and loving childhood, evolved in many activities and surrounded by friends and family. My parents provided me with many opportunities of travel as well as support towards any and all of my goals.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

List any volunteering you have done.
I try to stay active in my community as much as my schedule allows, participating in small volunteer events here and there. I have spent Thanksgivings helping serve dinner at St.James United church, as well as volunteering at a local school, (Dogwood Elementary) and involving myself in volunteer events through my high school (Rockridge).

Where is the most interesting place you have been?
This past summer I traveled to Europe visiting areas of Spain, France and Italy. It was a fantastic experience as Europe is an extremely eclectic place to see, packed with culture and excitement. It was truly an active learning experience in terms of lifestyle, history and society. It opened my eyes to ideas and concepts that can’t necessarily be learned through textbooks, such as World diversity, but more notably our similarities. United by the desire to achieve and accomplish, work hard, give back, to be happy and healthy and to love and be loved.

What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?
This is a difficult question because I believe myself and the other contestants have been given the opportunity to receive the title of Miss Universe Canada because of the qualities we share, the ability to embody young Canadian women; someone who is intelligent, charismatic, well spoken, and ambitious. With that being said I would like to say I am all of these and I would love the opportunity to be the role model of young women and have the chance to represent my Country. I am a very hard worker in every aspect of my life and I possess the desire and integrity.

What is your philosophy of/in life?
I believe we create our own destiny. Optimists seek opportunity in difficulty and pessimist see difficulty in opportunity; it’s a matter of making sure the optimist in one’s self always overrides the pessimist. What you put out into the world is what you get in return. The key is to be compassionate, sincere and enthusiastic in every and all of our endeavours.

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?
I hope to have a successful career in the Dental field, owning my own practice and working hard. More importantly I hope to be happy, to have made a positive difference in someone’s life and to tackle everything whole heartedly, with grace and with passion. It has been proven time and time again that success does not necessarily correlate with bliss, and to achieve, one must be fulfilled intrinsically.

Is there anything you would like to tell us about yourself? Something unique that has happened to you? Some interesting thing about you?
I am a huge advocate in the belief that knowledge is power and the importance of education. It is the sole to confidence that allows one to strive and achieve and is the backbone to the evolution of society. We are especially lucky that Canada provides so much access to higher levels of education and promotes the value of utilizing these opportunities and to grow as individuals. For that reason I am extremely proud to be Canadian.
